Airway Heights, STA to Celebrate 6th Avenue Opening with Ribbon Cutting

Airway Heights, WA – The City of Airway Heights and Spokane Transit Authority (STA) will celebrate the official opening of 6th Avenue with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on September 26 at 1:30 PM. The event will be held at the intersection of 6th Avenue and Lundstrom Street and will mark the delivery of a major infrastructure improvement, enhancing connectivity and accessibility for residents.

The completed project extends from Craig Road on the west to Russell Street on the east, with a full reconstruction from Ketchum Drive to Russell Street. The new boulevard includes roundabouts at Lundstrom and Lawson, a north-side infill sidewalk, a south-side shared-use path, ADA-compliant ramps, drainage swales, landscaped medians, and bus stops along the corridor. A key component of this project involved constructing a new stretch of roadway between Ketchum and Craig, enabling STA to provide service to this previously unserved area of Airway Heights.

STA was a major funder of this project, bringing six new bus stops to the corridor and increasing service on Route 65 to every 30 minutes on weekdays. This milestone project reflects a strong partnership between the City of Airway Heights and STA to improve not only transit access, but multimodal transportation options for this growing area of Airway Heights.

“The opening of 6th Avenue is a critical step in expanding transit access and reliability in Airway Heights,” said STA CEO Karl Otterstrom. “It allows us to better serve current riders and prepare for ridership growth in the years to come.”

The ceremony will feature remarks from Airway Heights and STA leaders, along with the project’s funding partner, the Freight Mobility Strategic Investment Board. A formal ribbon-cutting will follow. The event is open to the public, and community members are encouraged to attend.
