A Guide To Planning Your Field Trip
Here are some things to keep in mind while you are planning your field trip.
Don't Get Driven Past
A group of youth standing on the sidewalk can look like a group of kids waving at the bus. Make your intention to catch the bus clear with a chaperone waving at the driver with a bus pass or Connect card in their hand. Don’t wave like “hi” – wave more like you’re trying to hail a taxi.
Safety First
Coach operators work hard to stop the bus as close to the curb as possible (“Mind the gap”), and at the same time kids are very excited to be getting onto an STA bus. Safety is a top priority for both STA and schools, so please help keep your kids a few feet back from the curb until the bus has come to a complete stop.
Youth Ride Free
Youth ride free on STA, but teachers and chaperones must pay fare. Some school administrators have day passes available, so check with them to see if they can help you out.
Administrators, email Business Development to set up a purchasing account if your school would like to provide passes for field trips.
How Many People Are Going?
Plan on roughly one classroom per bus – about 30 people total.
If you have multiple classrooms, a really large class, or just a ton of chaperones, you should plan on breaking your field trip into two or more groups. You can try taking the same route at different times (buses on many of our routes come every 15 minutes) or look to see if there is another nearby route that part of your group could use.
Email Business Development for any larger groups if you’d like help figuring it out.

Engage Your Students
Youth ride free, even without a pass. However, signing up for Rider’s Licenses as a class can be a great citizenship lesson. It helps prepare them for how to ride public transit not only in Spokane but the world over.
