In partnership with Eastern Washington University (EWU) and the City of Cheney, the brand-new double-decker buses were officially introduced on Saturday, September 20, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Eagle Station on the EWU campus. The event marked the first day of double-decker service on Routes 6 and 66, connecting Cheney and downtown Spokane—a milestone in the region’s public transportation history.
Community members, transit riders, and university partners gathered to celebrate the next chapter in local mobility. Carly Cortright, STA Chief Communications & Customer Service Officer, opened the ceremony and welcomed special guests, including EWU President Shari McMahan, City of Cheney Mayor and STA Board Member Chris Grover, and STA CEO Karl Otterstrom. Each speaker highlighted the partnership between STA and EWU, the service’s sustainability benefits, and the enhanced experience these new vehicles bring to riders.
“These double-decker buses represent Spokane Transit’s continued commitment to innovation, sustainability, and enhanced rider experience,” – Karl Otterstrom.
Following the remarks, dignitaries gathered to cut the ceremonial ribbon in front of one of the towering new buses. Attendees were then invited aboard for a first look and enjoyed refreshments before the debut trips departed, 12:37 PM from Cheney and 1:07 PM from Spokane, aligning with EWU’s first home football game of the season. Special 15-minute service supported fans traveling to and from the game.
Celebration Beyond Eagle Station
The launch festivities extended beyond Cheney with a multi-site celebration at both the Jefferson Park & Ride and West Plains Transit Center. Riders boarding at these locations were treated to exclusive STA/EWU co-branded drink cuzzis and T-shirts, along with other promotional items, making the first day of double-decker service a multi-region event. These giveaways highlighted our appreciation for the riders and a long-standing partnership with EWU.
The new double-deckers offer panoramic views, greater capacity, and a more comfortable ride, advancing our mission to provide innovative and sustainable transit solutions.
With double-decker service now running regularly on Routes 6 and 66, our riders can experience a higher level of convenience and connectivity. The launch underscores an ongoing investment in a transit system that keeps the region moving forward.
